Texan football team opens Northwest ISD Stadium season
The Northwest High School Texan football team began Northwest ISD Stadium’s season on Friday, winning its season opener against Alvarado 35-20.

Northwest will look to build from its first playoff victory ever last season, when the team advanced to the area round of the University Interscholastic League playoffs.

This week, the Texans will again be the lone district football team playing at Northwest ISD Stadium, as they take on McKinney North on Friday. Next week, Eaton will host Frisco Independence at Northwest ISD Stadium on Sept. 14 in its home opener, and Byron Nelson will host Northwest at Northwest ISD Stadium in its home opener on Sept. 15.

Cox’s Stacie Breckley earns heart health grant
Cox Elementary School physical education teacher Stacie Breckley has earned one of her state association’s grants, joining an elite company of just 35 educators in Texas.

Mrs. Breckley earned the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance – or TAHPERD – grant for her work coordinating a Jump Rope for Heart event, teaching students about the importance of heart health. For her work, Mrs. Breckley was selected from more than 2,800 teachers who completed a similar event and earned one of TAHPERD’s 35 grants.

She will be honored at TAHPERD’s annual convention in Fort Worth on Thursday, Nov. 30, and Friday, Dec. 1. She will again be recognized at the association’s summer conference on July 16.

District schools, PTAs accepting donations for hurricane evacuees
Northwest ISD schools, in coordination with the Northwest ISD Council of PTAs, are currently accepting donations for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

Each district campus is serving as a drop-off location for donations that will go directly to organizations assisting hurricane evacuees. Donated items should be provided at the front office areas of schools, where they will be collected for sending to aid organizations.

Items specifically requested by aid groups for donation are as follows:

  • Clothing – specifically socks, underwear and warmups for all age groups and genders (preferably new or lightly used clothing)
  • Shoes (preferably new or lightly used)
  • Toiletries – specifically toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • Hygiene products
  • Baby items – specifically formula, wipes, bottles, diapers and Graco Pack n’ Plays

Next school board meeting taking place Sept. 12
The Northwest ISD Board of Trustees will hold its next regular meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, in the boardroom at the Northwest ISD Administration Building, located at 2001 Texan Drive in Fort Worth.

Middle school musical, ‘Beauty and the Beast Jr,’ performing Sept. 29-30
Northwest ISD’s annual middle school musical will host performances on Sept. 29 and 30, with students performing “Beauty and the Beast Jr.,” a family-friendly production of the popular Disney movie.

Performances will take place at Byron Nelson High School, located at 2775 Bobcat Blvd. in Trophy Club, beginning with a 7 p.m. performance on Friday, Sept. 30. Two performances will follow on Saturday, Sept. 30 – the first at 1 p.m., followed by the second at 5 p.m.

Tickets cost $5 for students and $10 for adults, with district employees and Gold Card members receiving free admission. Tickets can be purchased online at this link or at Byron Nelson immediately prior to a performance.
