Second Language Acquisition

English as a Second Language (ESL) Programs are a part of the regular educational program for Limited English Proficiency students of the Northwest Independent School District (NISD). ESL programs are intensive programs of instruction designed to develop proficiency in the comprehension, listening, speaking, reading, and composition in the English language. Instruction in ESL is commensurate with the student’s level of English proficiency and his/her level of academic achievement. Through the recognition of the student’s cultural and linguistic differences, appropriate instructional approaches will ensure a student’s academic growth and build a positive self-image. The primary purpose is to provide institutional support in such a way that the learner will no longer need language support to succeed.

Earning two or more credits in a language other than English is an entrance requirement for many universities. Students in NISD are encouraged to learn a second language through middle and high school world language courses to experience real-world personalized tasks embedded with authentic resources to practice and perform in the target language. Language competency across all modes of communication will develop life-long learners who gain experiences in languages other than English, experience exposure to varied cultures, and instill an appreciation for global diversity.
