First Week

From Ms. Friday

It has been an exciting first week in Ms. Friday’s First Grade.  I am enjoying working with all the children.  We have a great group!

I know you have been overloaded with forms from the beginning of the year. (I have been too with my two children).  Thanks for taking the time to fill all of them out.  I am hoping to have updates of our classroom activities that I can email to you and post on my website.

Much of our time these first few days have been on setting expectations and learning routines and procedures.

One reading goal for first graders is, by the end of the year, that your child is able to self select books and read independently for 25 minutes.  Each first grade room is graphing how long their class can read independently. Our class best is 6 minutes.

During Writing, we have brainstormed ideas to write about and each child has a personal “Ideas for Writing” list in their writing journal.  We also have written a class book and each student has started their own book.

Each day during Word Work Phonics we review the high frequency words from kindergarten and add a 5 sight words to our Word Wall daily.  These are words that students will be expected to spell correctly in all writing.

During Math and Science times, the students have explored materials we will be using throughout the year. Each child has created a math and a science journal.

We address Social Studies during Reading and Writing Workshop.  We have written our class Social Contract what we want our classroom to be like so we all can learn.

I am excited about working with each one of the children.  They all have worked hard this week.  I am very proud of them.  Please feel free to contact me at school either by phone or email.
