Each of Northwest ISD’s three comprehensive high schools – Byron Nelson, Eaton and Northwest – walked away from the University Interscholastic League 2018 Wrestling State Tournament with a state champion, and several other student-athletes represented their schools with podium finishes.

Both of Byron Nelson’s student-athletes earned podium finishes at the state meet, with sophomore Lexie Basham earning the gold medal in the 6A girls 138-pound weight class. In the 6A girls 148-pound weight class, junior Kaylynn Albrecht earned a podium finish with her fifth-place match victory.

From Eaton, junior Mattison Parker won a state championship in the 5A girls 138-pound weight class, an improvement from her bronze medal as a sophomore last year. In the 5A girls 215-pound weight class, Eaton senior Asanta Doe earned fourth-place honors and a podium finish.

Northwest came home with two state champions, including senior Michael Kumlien earning the state championship in the 138-pound 5A boys weight class, his second consecutive year as a state wrestling champion. On the girls side, senior Andrena Carter picked up a state championship in the 5A girls 165-pound weight class after coming in third last year. Sophomore Aiden Jean added to the Texans’ medal haul, earning silver by finishing second in the 5A boys 160-pound weight class. Junior Madison Brown also earned a medal, winning the bronze in the 5A girls 102-pound weight class.

Notably, Lexie and Mattison’s victories are their schools’ first state wrestling champions ever. Additionally, Mattison is Eaton’s first athletic state champion ever in any sport.

In addition to their championships, Michael Kumlien and Mattison Parker earned 5A Outstanding Wrestler honors for boys and girls, respectively. In coaching awards, Northwest’s Dan McCready won 5A Girls Coach of the Year, and the Texans’ Jessica Fresh earned 5A Girls Assistant Coach of the Year.
