National Merit distinction earned by 18 Northwest ISD students

For their top scores on the PSAT, 18 Northwest ISD students have earned distinction in the National Merit Scholar program, representing each of the district’s four high schools.

To earn National Merit distinction, students must score among the top in the state or nation on the PSAT or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test during their junior year of high school. The National Merit Scholarship Program recognizes students who are among the roughly 16,000 top scorers as Semifinalists, while students among the roughly 34,000 top scorers earn Commended status. More than 1.5 million high school students take one of the qualifying tests during their junior year.

Additionally, the College Board partners with the NMSP to honor roughly 5,000 students through the National Hispanic Recognition Program. These students are among the top Hispanic or Latino test-takers in the nation.

Northwest ISD is represented by three students earning Semifinalist status, Byron Nelson High School’s Sarah Cornerstone and Hannah Stauss, and Eaton High School’s Grant Westfall. These students will next be considered for National Merit Finalist distinction, which will also take into consideration their academic performances throughout the entirety of high school and SAT scores.

An additional 10 Northwest ISD students earned Commended Scholar status. From Byron Nelson, Ty Bogar, Joseph Cavazos, Margaret English, Claire Palla and Anna Tappan were named Commended Scholars. From Eaton, Gloria Lacombe and Morgan Washington were recognized as Commended Scholars. From Northwest High School, Samantha Hicks earned Commended Scholar distinction. From Steele Accelerated High School, Emily Armstrong and Punn Havananda received Commended Scholar recognition.

Finally, five district students were honored through the National Hispanic Recognition Program. From Byron Nelson, Conner Lowe, Chloe Long, Nicolas Mauer and Blake Martinez were recognized through the program. Eaton’s Victoria Gonzales was also recognized in the program.
