Northwest ISD’s curriculum team has selected the district’s elementary Writers of the Month for October 2019, honoring four students for their academic capabilities.

This month’s honorees include Aibhlin Kachur from Haslet Elementary SchoolKameryn McLemore from Hatfield Elementary School and Ava Lindgen from Lance Thompson Elementary School. Each writer selected her favorite recent work to highlight for the award.

Aibhlin recently wrote a fictional story about a writing contest and said she likes making up her own stories because she finds them fun to imagine. Kameryn recently wrote a fictional story about a young girl overcoming her fears and trying a gymnastics class; she said she enjoys writing about events that relate to her own experiences. Ava recently wrote a fictional story about a girl with a hearing impairment during a flood; she said she likes writing stories that are realistic fiction, because they can have similarities with true situations.

The district’s literacy coaches work with a group of campus teachers and administrators to select students who show exemplary writing performance or tremendous growth as writers. After students are chosen, each is asked to select his or her favorite work of writing and explain why that work was chosen.

Students are recognized by district educators as well as through the Northwest ISD English Language Arts program with a certificate of achievement.
