Northwest ISD’s curriculum team has selected the district’s elementary Writers of the Month for November 2019, honoring three students for their academic capabilities.

This month’s honorees include Trevor Gardner from Beck Elementary SchoolNathan Cahak from Justin Elementary School and Camden Tyner from Love Thompson Elementary School. Each writer selected his or her favorite recent work to highlight for the award.

Trevor recently wrote an essay about Jackie Robinson because he was able to share his thoughts and admiration for the first black MLB player’s courage entering the league. Nathan recently wrote an essay about his dog, Maggie; he said that this year he has learned to write longer and use more details in his writing. Camden recently wrote a fictional story about a girl who was new to a school and said she used good description and word choice to give readers a better, more vivid understanding of the setting.

The district’s literacy coaches work with a group of campus teachers and administrators to select students who show exemplary writing performance or tremendous growth as writers. After students are chosen, each is asked to select his or her favorite work of writing and explain why that work was chosen.

Students are recognized by district educators as well as through the Northwest ISD English Language Arts program with a certificate of achievement.
