Byron Nelson and Eaton cheer squads at the UIL state meet

Cheerleading squads from Byron Nelson and Eaton high schools earned top-three finishes at the UIL State Spirit Championships, placing among the top teams in the state’s second-largest classification.

In the state meet finals on Saturday, Jan. 18, the Byron Nelson Bobcats earned a second-place finish in the 6A Division II with a score of 88.05, just 0.55 points away from first-place Schertz Clemens High School. The Eaton Eagles followed in third place in the same division with a score of 87.80.

Eaton’s squad earned another honor in the preliminary round on Friday, Jan. 17, finishing with the top score in the fight song portion of the competition. The Eagles earned a score of 77.767, one of just two squads to break the 77-point barrier.

A total of 55 teams competed in the 6A Division II preliminary round, with the top 20 teams advancing to the finals.

This marks the third consecutive year the Bobcats have earned awards at the state meet, as they finished third overall in 2019 and won the band dance competition in 2018 en route to qualifying for the finals. The Eagles also advanced to the final round for the third consecutive year; they previously earned bronze in the finals in 2018.
