The Byron Nelson High School Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Gary Keller and Jed Weeks, has been invited to perform for the 2022 TMEA Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Convention, held in San Antonio Feb. 9-12, 2022. District educators and staff members surprised their students today with the announcement, followed by a small reception. Ensembles invited by TMEA demonstrate the highest level of achievement in music education. It is only through the genuine commitment and collaboration of every student and director involved that an ensemble achieves this honor.

“The Fine Arts department of Northwest ISD is very proud of the accomplishments of the Byron Nelson Symphony Orchestra,” said Dr. Kevin Lacefield, Executive Director of Fine Arts at Northwest ISD. “Receiving an invitation to perform at the TMEA’s annual conference is the highest achievement a high school music ensemble can attain. We are very much looking forward to the ensemble’s February performance in San Antonio!”

The ensemble’s selection was based on an audio recording submission of a recent performance from the 2020-2021 school year. A completed application and program resume was also submitted and the ensemble was ultimately selected by panel of three to five members from around the state hand-selected by the TMEA Orchestra Division Vice President.

Hundreds of ensembles applied for selection as a 2022 TMEA Invited Performing Group. A full list of invited schools can be found on the TMEA website.

Throughout its 100-year history, the TMEA Convention has offered music educators professional development, clinics, and inspiring performances by elementary through university ensembles.

Byron Nelson's Symphony Orchestra was also recently invited to the prestigious Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois at the end of December. The Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference is the world’s largest instrumental music education conference, annually drawing approximately 17,000 attendees to Chicago from all 50 states and as many as forty countries. It is held every December in downtown Chicago.
