Course Descriptions
9th grade: PRINCIPLES OF CONSTRUCTION (1 credit)
This course provides knowledge of construction safety, construction mathematics, and common hand and power tools. Students will identify and develop professional skills required to work in the construction industry. Course studies include safety standards, recognizing hazards, construction mathematics and measurements, the use and maintenance of hand and power tools, reading construction drawings, material handling, and verbal and written jobsite communication.
Certifications: OSHA 10-hour training program and NCCER Core certifications
10th grade: Building Maintenance Technology I (2 creditS)
This course focuses on the knowledge and skills needed to enter a career in building maintenance and construction. Building Maintenance Technoloy I will coontinue to build students' understanding of professional standards and employability skills, worksite safety guidelines and regulations, and reading construction drawings and commercial documents such as architectural, engineering, and shop drawings. Students will gain knowledge and develop skills in plumbing; electrical; and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). Students also learn methods for drywall installation and repair; roofing; insulation systems; installing cabinetry and countertops; and selecting and installing flooring. Students will demonstrate the skills necessary to safely use and maintain hand tools, power tools, and the latest construction technologies.
11th grade: Building Maintenance Technology II (2 creditS)
This course builds on Building Maintenance Technology I to provide advanced knowledge and skills needed to enter a career in building maintenance and construction. Building Maintenance Technology II will provide students with knowledge and skills in safety standards; safety devices in electrical circuits; maintenance of electrical HVAC; and concepts of historical preservation. Students learn how to interpret blueprints; install lamps and lighting fixtures; use and maintain common electrical testing equipment; and install, select, prepare, join, and support copper and plastic pipes.
12th grade: Practicum in Construction Technology (2 creditS)
This advanced course will immerse students in a workplace environment to develop professional, technical and project management skills. Course studies include developing a management plan for a project; applying applicable codes, laws, standards and regulations to a research and development project; describe project expectations through a flow chart; use critical thinking to solve problems and make decisions related to research, design, and development; develop a project budget and describe costs associated with the project; and use advanced technology, tools, materials, and processes to complete construction projects.
