Course Descriptions

Principles of Education & Training (1 credit)

This course covers a variety of topics including learning processes, education theory, classroom management, child development and lesson planning. Students will research careers and topics in education including teacher training, interview processes and ethics in the workplace. Students will experience field-based teaching observation opportunities and create a portfolio that will serve as a foundation for future education courses.
 

Child Development (1 credit)

This course examines the development of children focusing on common physical, cognitive, emotional, and social developmental milestones from conception through adolescence. Students participate in a Reality Works Baby Simulator project, prepare nutritious kid-friendly snacks, investigate careers that work with children.
Certifications: Heartsaver CPR and First Aid
 

Instructional Practices [Internship] (2 Credits)*

This course is a field-based internship in which students work under the joint direction of their course instructor and a mentor teacher on an NISD Elementary, Middle or High School campus. Students learn to plan and direct instruction, develop materials for educational environments, assist with record keeping, and complete other responsibilities of teachers, trainers, paraprofessionals, and other educational personnel. *Option to take as Dual Credit earning 3 College Hours through TCC.

Practicum in Education & Training [Internship] (2 credits)*

This course is an advanced field-based internship in which students work under the joint direction of their course instructor and a mentor teacher on an NISD Elementary, Middle or High School campus. Students learn to prepare and implement individualized instruction and group activities, prepare instructional materials, and complete other responsibilities of classroom teachers, trainers, paraprofessionals, and other educational personnel. *Option to take as Dual Credit earning 3 College Hours through TCC.

• The Teaching and Training Program of Study is for students interested in pursuing a career teaching, coaching, or working with children primarily in a school, home or other academic type setting.
• A student interested in these courses should display good character attributes such as being respectful, honest, trustworthy, patient, and a good communicator as they will work in direct roles with elementary campuses and students.

In the student’s junior and senior year, students will have the opportunity to leave campus for 2 periods a day to intern at a partnering NISD Elementary campus and classroom.

Students will gain first hand experience of becoming a teacher/coach by working with students 1-on-1, in small groups as well as teaching the whole class. Students will be able to create bulletin boards, grade papers, conduct reading groups and many more activities.

Students are also eligible to attend field trips with their interning elementary class such as going to the zoo, Bass Hall, science museums, the OLC, and many more fun places! Student interns also attend their campuses Field Day, Valentine’s Day Parties and other school-wide events!
