Assessments & Testing

Students take part in a wide array of assessment and testing programs throughout their academic journeys, from state-mandated exams to tests required for admission to many colleges and universities. This section of our website will provide information about several well-known assessments taken by Northwest ISD students.

Information about tests and assessments you will find on this website include:

  • ACT: One of two common standardized exams used for college admissions. The ACT consists of four multiple-choice sections: English, math, reading, science and writing.
  • Credit By Examination: Currently enrolled students are able to participate in acceleration exams to advance one grade level or earn high school course credit. These tests are offered four times a year.
  • MAP Assessments: Students in second through ninth grade take the national NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (or MAP) to measure each student’s academic growth in Math and Reading over the course of a school year. This assessment is specifically designed to be a personalized experience to identify what the student is “Ready to learn, today.”
  • PSAT: The Preliminary SAT (or PSAT) measures readiness for college and practices for the SAT. The PSAT is also used for many scholarship opportunities.
  • SAT: One or two common standardized tests used for college admissions. The test is composed of three sections: reading, writing and language, and math.
  • STAAR: The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness is the standardized testing system used across grade levels in Texas to gauge a student's academic knowledge for his or her current grade level.
  • TSI: The TSI Assessment (TSIA) is part of the Texas Success Initiative enacted by the Texas State Legislature and designed to determine a student’s readiness for college-level coursework in the general areas of reading, writing, and mathematics.
