Barksdale Middle School students to be known as the Broncos

Northwest ISD has unveiled the official mascot for Barksdale Middle School, which is set to open for the 2026–2027 school year near the Pecan Square community in Northlake.

The Broncos mascot was revealed during a special ceremony Friday. The event brought together students from feeder elementary schools — Daniel, Justin and Lance Thompson — along with members of Floyd Barksdale’s family, Barksdale Middle School principal Tricia Luktenhaus, Northwest ISD staff and community members.
Barksdale Middle School is named in honor of Floyd Barksdale, a former Northwest ISD board trustee and longtime district supporter. He was widely known as the voice of Northwest Texan football and a dedicated advocate for youth sports in the Haslet and Justin communities.

During the ceremony, attendees signed the campus learning stair, a central gathering space, and toured the nearly completed facility.
The school’s official colors were also announced earlier this school year. Barksdale Middle School’s primary colors will be gold and white, with dark gray as a secondary color.
Approved by voters as part of the district’s 2023 bond program, the new campus will incorporate Northwest ISD’s latest design features, including collaborative learning spaces and clearly defined areas for academics, athletics and fine arts.
