The Byron Nelson High School symphony orchestra has received an invitation to perform at the prestigious Midwest Clinic, an international band and orchestra convention held each December. In advance of the trip, the group will host a special preview concert.

This year’s convention will take place December 15 to 18 in Chicago, with Byron Nelson’s orchestra performing from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, December 15. Since its inception, the Midwest Clinic has hosted more than 18,000 attendees from all 50 states and more than 40 countries. Each year, roughly 50 musical groups perform at the event, placing the Byron Nelson symphony orchestra in distinguished company.

A special clinic preview concert will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, December 12, at the Byron Nelson High School Performing Arts Center.

The conference’s mission is to strengthen international instrumental music education through extensive professional development opportunities, inspirational experiences and cultivation of rewarding professional relationships.  Each year, event organizers accept band and orchestra performance submissions in order to invite talented student and professional groups to perform at their convention.

In addition to the Midwest Clinic, the Byron Nelson symphony orchestra has also recently received an invitation to perform at the Texas Music Educators Association’s annual convention in February.

Byron Nelson’s symphony orchestra is composed of the top string, woodwind, brass and percussion students from both the band and orchestra programs.  The ensemble is under the direction of Gary Keller, director of orchestras, and Jed Weeks, director of bands.  The symphony orchestra was formed in 2012 and has received UIL Sweepstakes Awards for the past nine years.
