Student-athletes from Northwest ISD traveled to the UIL Wrestling State Championships last weekend with Byron Nelson High School senior Marli Denmark earning an individual state championship.

Marli triumphed in the 6A girls 140-pound weight class by winning all four of her matches on Friday and Saturday at the Berry Center in Cypress on her way to earning a gold medal and state title.

Marli finished on the podium as a sophomore and junior, but in her final high school match reached a new summit as a state champion.

“It all happened so fast,” she told the media after her championship match. “I felt so proud of myself for being able to achieve goals I’ve been dreaming about since freshman year.

“This championship means everything to me. It represents all the hard work and sacrifices I’ve been through. To young wrestlers – I hope it shows that you just have to keep showing up.”

Three additional NISD wrestlers placed on the podium, highlighted by a pair of fourth place finishes.

Cole Gonzales, a freshman at Byron Nelson, fought through his bracket to earn fourth in the 6A boys 138-pound weight class.

Iliana Villagrana, a sophomore at Eaton, made it to the semifinals of the 6A girls 120-pound weight class on her way to a 4th place finish.

In addition, Eaton senior BJ Perez battled through the 6A boys 144-pound weight class for a 6th place finish.
