Daniel Elementary pre-K teacher shares passion for teaching, dancing and giving back
Daniel Elementary pre-K teacher Maria Cunningham has spent 28 years shaping young minds in the classroom. Now in her second year at the school, she continues to embrace new opportunities for growth — not just in education, but in her community as well.
Ms. Cunningham recently participated in the United Way Tribute, the largest fundraiser supporting the wide range of programs offered for Denton County. This annual event features ten couples who are challenged to learn both a group dance and a couples dance, all while raising funds to support community services. Each pair is encouraged to raise $2,000, and this year’s gala successfully brought in an impressive $258,000.
“I love dance and helping my community,” Ms. Cunningham shared. “I enjoy challenging myself to learn new skills, and if I can raise money for a good cause in the process, then it’s a win-win.”
It’s not her first time giving back — previously, she participated in a fundraiser supporting students and teachers in Denton ISD, her former district. She also donates annually to the Northwest ISD Education Foundation, underscoring her commitment to education and community enrichment.
For those who love a challenge and want to make a difference, Ms. Cunningham recommends joining next year’s United Way Tribute group of dancers.
“It’s an incredible experience, and I would encourage anyone who’s up for it to get involved,” she said. “I wasn’t expecting to meet so many wonderful people that I now consider friends.”
