Destination Imagination cultivates students’ creativity, courage, and curiosity through open-ended academic challenges in the fields of STEM, fine arts and service learning. Team members learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem-solving process.

Seventy-two competitive teams from Northwest ISD participated in the Greater Fort Worth Regional Tournament on February 10, 2024. The teams, ranging from elementary, middle and high school, competed for the chance to move on to the Lone Star Finals. The tournament is composed of a Central Challenge, which the team has worked on since October, and an Instant Challenge. The two scores are combined and teams are ranked, first through sixth place, within their challenge and age group. Forty-two NISD teams medaled at this year’s tournament. Schools with teams that placed include Beck, Curtis, Daniel, Granger, Haslet, Hughes, J.C. Thompson, Lakeview, Peterson, Roanoke, Schluter, Adams, Chisholm Trail, Medlin, Wilson, Worthington, Byron Nelson, Eaton and Northwest.

Out of the 42 teams that earned a medal, eleven teams will be moving on to the Lone Star Finals Tournament on April 13, in Arlington, Texas. Three high school teams - all from Byron Nelson - have advanced to the state tournament: the "Fire Breathing Rubber Ducks," "Average Joes," and "Insert Team Name Here."

Three middle school teams will represent NISD at the state competition in April: the "Socks-n'-Crocs" from Worthington, "Take 5" from Medlin and "Banana Bunches" from Adams.

Lakeview's "The Wabbits" and "Bacon on Deck," J.C. Thompson's "The Snacks are Back!," Granger's "Futuristic Frozen Flurries" and Daniel's "Smarties" are the advancing elementary teams.

Additionally, "Take 5" from Medlin and "Socks-n'-Crocs" from Worthington earned the highest Instant Challenge score in their division. In the secondary level, the "Average Joes" and "Fire Breathing Rubber Ducks" from Byron Nelson and "Kritically Indecisive Teenagers" from Northwest HS earned the highest Instant Challenge score. Notably, "Socks-n’-Crocs" competed in two different challenges and won highest Instant Challenge for both!

Elementary teams earning a high instant challenge score include "Creative Corgis" from Beck and "The Iconics" from Nance.

The GFW Regional Tournament included the Rising Stars Challenge as well. Rising Stars is the non-competitive division for kindergarten through second grade students. Northwest ISD had twenty-nine teams participate this year and they all celebrated with time in the Ta Da Room.

Awards & Recognitions

"The Snacks Are Back!" from JC Thompson were awarded the DaVinci Award. This award is given to the team who demonstrates adventurous & creative risk on how they approach the team challenge.

The Torchbearer Award recognizes the extraordinary contributions a Project Outreach team and their projects have on the real world. "Bacon on Deck" from Lakeview was the recipient of this year’s Torchbearer Award.

The following students earned the Magellan Award – Jonah Hoffman, Annebelle Hoffman, Zoe Tsapos, Will Koch, Aaron Reisman, Haley Lentz and Nikunj Gupta. The Magellan Award is awarded to students who participate in all six challenges over the course of their DI career. The award encourages team members to try new and different ideas, to explore different skills, to think outside the box – or to convert the box into something else entirely.  Named after Ferdinand Magellan, the first person to circumnavigate the globe, it reflects the continued striving to reach the stars – and even beyond to the galaxies of the Magellanic Clouds.

Three NISD seniors were recognized for their participation in DI: Nikunj Gupta, Clarisa Stron, and Neill Shoemaker. These students will be presented with an honor cord representing their involvement with DI to wear at graduation in May.

Byron Nelson Senior Nikunj Gupta was awarded the Karen Crawford Memorial Scholarship from the GFW DI Regional Board. This scholarship is awarded to an individual who has contributed to growth in the program at the regional level. It was awarded to Nikunj based on his demonstrated service, recruitment and volunteerism to the Greater Fort Worth Region of Destination Imagination.
