Adjustment to 2024-2025 school days for potential weather closures
Based on family feedback during previous inclement weather closures, Northwest ISD will extend the school day by 5 minutes beginning in 2024-2025 to add enough time to absorb an additional two days of school closures.
Northwest ISD currently operates school days with enough time to absorb two days of school closures, and the additional time will allow the district to absorb a total of four days of school closures if necessary. With the change, the district will not have to add more school days in the event of three or four school day closures. School closures most commonly occur during inclement weather affecting road conditions.
Beginning 2024-2025, elementary schools will end their days 5 minutes later (at 3:05 p.m.). Middle schools will begin their days 5 minutes earlier (at 8:50 a.m.), as will high schools (at 8:25 a.m.). Both Steele Early College High School (8:15 a.m.) and the Special Programs Center (8:25 a.m.) will also begin their days earlier. New start and end times – going into effect in August 2024 – by campus level can be seen in the chart below (see current times on this page).
In Texas, school days are required to meet a set number of minutes during the school year, and enough time must be built into the calendar to absorb at least two days of school closures. By adding more minutes, Northwest ISD will only extend the duration of the school day, it will not add new school days to the calendar.
