Northwest ISD has named Dr. Sarah Thornell as the next principal of Justin Elementary School, transitioning a respected leader to a new campus beginning in 2026.
Dr. Thornell, current principal of Sendera Ranch Elementary School, will replace Dr. Stephen Garretson following his retirement in December. She has led Sendera Ranch Elementary School since 2023, and she previously served as a principal in White Settlement ISD for three years. Her administrative experience also includes three years as an assistant principal in Northwest ISD.
Before her time in campus administration, Dr. Thornell was a longtime Northwest ISD classroom teacher. She has taught at both the elementary and middle school level, serving as an English Language Arts department chair during her teaching tenure.
Dr. Thornell said she’s excited to support Justin Elementary School and build on the strong foundation laid by Dr. Garretson and the school’s teachers and staff.
“Justin Elementary School has a rich history in Northwest ISD, and I’m excited to get to know the students, staff and community,” she said. “I look forward to partnering with our teachers and parents to ensure all our Jaguars continue to grow and thrive.”
In addition to her work in the school, Dr. Thornell actively engages in professional organizations to advance school initiatives. She has served as an instructional facilitator in Northwest ISD, and she has completed the National Institute of School Leadership program.
Dr. Thornell earned her doctorate in learning and organizational change from Baylor University, where she also earned her bachelor’s degree, and she earned her master’s degree in educational administration from Texas Woman’s University.
As Dr. Thornell transitions to lead Justin Elementary School, Northwest ISD has elevated Kenni Dwyer to interim principal of Sendera Ranch Elementary School from her current role as assistant principal at the campus.
