Lakeview Elementary Teacher named Outstanding Elementary Science Teacher of the Year

The Science Teachers Association of Texas has named Lakeview Elementary teacher Karissa Smith the Outstanding Elementary Science Teacher of the Year, recognizing her creativity in the classroom, commitment to professional growth and dedication to supporting young learners.
Each year, STAT recognizes excellence in and dedication to the field of science education through its annual award program. Ms. Smith was honored this week at the annual Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching, receiving an award, $500 gift and more.
Ms. Smith, a second-grade teacher with 18 years of experience, has spent most of her career inspiring curiosity in kindergarten and early elementary students. She also serves as a kindergarten science curriculum writer for Northwest ISD, helping design lessons, refine the district’s scope and sequence and lead professional development.
Her impact extends statewide through her work as a TEKS Guide reviewer and as a CAST presenter on phenomena-based instruction. In 2025, she received the Grand Prize Ernest and Sarah Butler Award for Excellence in Science Teaching.
Beyond the classroom, Ms. Smith is developing Fascination Science, a resource platform for teachers, and writing a children’s picture book series introducing crosscutting science concepts.
