NISD-record 19 students advance to state visual arts competition

Northwest ISD will be represented by up to 19 students — the most recorded by the district — at the State Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) competition in San Marcos. Students advanced to the state level after receiving a Superior Rating (IV) in a regional and area round of judging.

To enter the VASE competition, students create artworks and write about their creative processes and understanding of visual art. At the regional competition, students articulate information about their artwork during an interview with a VASE juror, who evaluates their work using a standards-based rubric.

Jurors assess each work of art for originality of concept, technical expertise, understanding of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for visual art, and the interpretation of the student's stated intent.

All artworks receiving a Superior Rating (IV)  will advance to Area Judging, held at the end of the meet. The top 10 percent of each division (level) of the Area-qualified artworks will be selected to advance to the State VASE event.

VASE is the only art event of its kind for academically eligible high school students, and advancement to State VASE is the highest level of achievement in visual art in Texas.

While attending the State VASE event in San Marcos on April 27-28, students will have the opportunity to participate in workshops, master artist demonstrations, and receive portfolio reviews by college representatives.

The following is a complete list of NISD students who have qualified for the State VASE event.
