NISD represented by 16 wrestlers heading to state championships

A total of 16 student-athletes from across Northwest ISD will represent the district at the upcoming University Interscholastic League Wrestling State Tournament in Cypress, Texas. Wrestlers from Northwest, Byron Nelson and Eaton High School qualified for the meet based on their performances in regional competition.

Northwest High School (5A)

Northwest High School qualified the most female wrestlers from across the state of Texas in the 5A division. The Lady texans finished second overall at regionals. Mackenzie Blue and Trinity Washko each finished as Regional Champions in their respective weight classes of 132 and 185. Joining Washko and Blue at state are wrestlers Heidi Caprio, Emma Graves, Meadow Gandy and Sierra Simmons.

Led by Regional Champion (185 lb.) Chuck Reitz, the Northwest High School boys wrestling team secured first place at regionals and will send seven student-athletes to compete at state. Best of luck to Reitz, Wyatt McClellan, Toby Ford, Trace Adams, Nate Jean, Ethan Jean and Curtis Charles.

"We are so proud to be sending 13 wrestlers to state this year," said Northwest High School head coach Jessica Fresh. "We are continuing to put in the hard work this week to finish off strong at the State Championships this weekend."

Byron Nelson High School (6A)

Congratulations to Byron Nelson High School wrestlers Alyssa Ruiz (120) and Hunter Stenger (190), who placed second and third at regionals. Ruiz fought hard for her second-place finish, while Stenger pushed across the back-side of the regional bracket to earn his trip to state.

In addition to the schools' state qualifiers, Byron Nelson assistant coach Dustin Basham earned Girls Assistant Coach of the Year for Region 1-6A.

Eaton High School (6A)

Congratulations to Eaton wrestler Emilee Zeringue, who also competed in the 6A Region I tournament last weekend and qualified for the 6A UIL State Championships after placing third.

Both the 5A and 6A UIL Wrestling State Tournament will take place February 17 and 18 at the Berry Center in Cypress. For more information, please visit the UIL website
