Northwest ISD planning Limited Open Enrollment for 2026-2027
To provide school stability and continue to maintain high educational standards across all areas of the district, Northwest ISD plans to implement Limited Open Enrollment in 2026. This program would focus on campuses with significant capacity, particularly those in areas of declining enrollment.
Scheduled to begin for the 2026-2027 school year, the new program would be limited to specific campuses with space available. Without this program, Northwest ISD would face more frequent rezoning that would move students from campuses more frequently. In more extreme situations, Northwest ISD would have to consider closing and consolidating campuses similar to neighboring districts to maximize limited state funding.
Key aspects of the program include:
- Student Standards: Students who are accepted into the program must meet academic, attendance and behavioral standards. Northwest ISD will not accept students who may deter a high-quality educational environment.
- High-Quality Offerings: Students who are accepted and enroll in Northwest ISD are considered Northwest ISD students and will receive the same access to high-quality academic and extracurricular offerings.
- Limited Availability: Because some areas of Northwest ISD are declining or stagnant enrollment, only campuses with capacity will be part of the Limited Open Enrollment program. These campuses will be revised annually, and significant space will always be reserved for students who may move into a school’s attendance zone.
Northwest ISD plans to continue preparing the program for a tentative application period of February 1 to March 1, with families notified of their acceptance by April 1. They would then have two weeks to signify their intent to enroll.
This new program would not change existing transfer processes, such as transfers for students within the district or transfers for children of teachers outside the district.
