Northwest ISD elementary students got a special treat this week — a unique sandwich featuring pancakes, eggs, bacon and a drizzle of syrup.

The creative mind behind this dish? Fourth-grader Asher Holcomb from Lakeview Elementary.

Asher’s idea was selected as the winner of the district’s Breakfast for Lunch Challenge, an initiative by NISD Child Nutrition. Students were invited to brainstorm a new entrée, write a description and submit a drawing of their concept.

“Asher’s entry was different from anything we already offer, and we wanted students to try something different,” said Anna Dewell, marketing communications specialist for Aramark, the company that manages NISD’s Child Nutrition Department. “It’s important to us for students to have a voice in what’s offered.”

Aramark hosts challenges like this to encourage student engagement and excitement about school meals, Dewell added.

On Wednesday, Asher was officially recognized for his winning idea. He received a certificate featuring his drawing, a ribbon, and the best reward of all — seeing his classmates enjoy the sandwich he created.

Asher named his breakfast sandwich The PBS. When asked what inspired the idea, he said the classic BLT.

“I just thought of a BLT and figured, why not give it that name?” Asher said. “I’m happy with how it turned out, and I know other people like it too.”
