Steele Early College High School junior Victoria Saldivar is gaining statewide recognition for her expressive, experimental artwork inspired by family and personal experiences.
Victoria recently earned first place out of 400 entries in her division at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo art competition for her piece Pork Rib, receiving a belt buckle and a $6,000 scholarship. Another piece, Chicken Wing, was selected for display in the Texas Governor’s Mansion as part of the Youth Art Exhibition, a rare honor for young Texas artists.
“It was such a cool experience, knowing that the first lady got to choose her favorites and mine was selected,” Victoria said.
She began working on Chicken Wing in July 2024 and entered it into several competitions before earning the statewide distinction. After placing in the Youth Art Contest, Victoria attended a ceremony in Austin where the First Lady of Texas selected her piece to be displayed in the Governor’s Mansion for one year.
Victoria has been drawing since childhood, starting with sketchbooks in art class before devoting more time to her craft in high school. She describes her artistic style as ever-changing and rooted in exploration.
“I like to try new things and see what happens,” she said. “My art is usually inspired by what I see and experience, not a single person.”
Her winning piece Pork Rib was inspired by a birthday dinner with her father at a BBQ restaurant in San Antonio. She captured the moment in a photo, then transformed it into a painting that went on to win top honors. She plans to compete again next year.
Though Victoria intends to pursue a college degree in film, she says art will always be part of her life.
“This means a lot to me,” she said. “I’m excited, and my parents and art teacher are too. I have big goals, and this is helping me get used to the feeling of success. I’m really grateful for the experience.”
