Diamondbacks selected as mascot of Davis High School

September 25, 2026
When students voted for the mascot of Davis High School, they chose a clear-cut winner in demonstrative fashion, selecting the Diamondbacks with 83.5% of all responses.
Northwest ISD announced the mascot for the new school, the district’s fourth comprehensive high school, during a topping-out ceremony on Friday, September 25. The reveal marked the culmination of a design process following a vote from more than 1,000 middle school students in May. Prior to the student vote, a focus group of students met with Dr. Ron Myers, principal of Davis High School, to generate potential mascot names.
That student group discussed the characteristics of each proposed mascot and the qualities they hoped to represent the school for academics, athletics, fine arts and beyond. Ultimately, two options were presented to students: the Aviators or the Diamondbacks, with the latter option receiving tremendous support.
The selection of Diamondbacks as the school’s mascot joins the previously announced school colors of maroon, black and white to form the Davis High School branding. Throughout Davis High School, numerous graphics and murals will reflect the branding, including a visually striking three-story design near the cafeteria.
Dr. Myers told event attendees – including future students of the school who helped unveil the mascot – that the inaugural class of Davis Diamondbacks will set traditions that will endure for generations to come. That legacy will define the school, with the Diamondback mascot serving as a rallying point for students to establish school pride.
“I am proud that Davis High School’s mascot will be one that commands respect, is uniquely Texan and makes its presence known when approached. The clear choice from our students to select the Diamondbacks as our mascot shows the unified voice and identity they want to build together.”

Named after longtime influential Northwest ISD school board member J. Fred Davis Jr., Davis High School will open in 2027 with freshmen and sophomores, adding a junior class during the 2028-2029 school year and a senior class during the 2029-2030 school year. The district’s Transportation, Automation & Logistics Academy housed at Davis High School will open alongside the new school, while Northwest ISD is awaiting federal approval for the JROTC program proposed at the campus.
The topping-out ceremony and mascot reveal marked the first formal school announcement at the construction site since its groundbreaking took place in early 2025. Since that time, the district selected the school name following community nominations, with the Davis family in attendance at Friday’s ceremony. Dr. Anne Simpson, daughter of Mr. Davis and a former school board member herself, said the family looks forward to seeing the traditions Davis Diamondbacks set over the coming years.
“Dad knew the importance of education – for him, education was a way for everyone to prosper,” Dr. Simpson said. “He would often remind us that you can make and lose your money, but education will always be with you. Having served on the board of education, he would get great joy seeing the leadership and dedication of Northwest ISD and its students across the decades, just as it does for everyone in our family today.”
A high school rezoning process will take place this semester to create attendance boundaries for Davis High School and best balance enrollment across the district. The public will receive the proposed high school attendance zones within 24 hours of the September 28 school board meeting.

ABOUT DAVIS HIGH SCHOOL
Approved by voters in the 2023 bond election, Davis High School will open in August 2027 and receive students from Tidwell and Worthington middle schools, though exact boundaries will be set during a rezoning process next winter. The school will feature the district’s new Transportation, Automation & Logistics Academy as part of Northwest ISD’s industry-leading career and technical education programs.
The school resides off North Riverside Drive in Fort Worth, near I-35 and S.H. 170. Construction of the school commenced in 2025, and motorists can see the school taking shape when driving by its location on North Riverside Drive or the service road of I-35 next to the school. The school location can be seen on this Google Map.
Davis High School will feature Northwest ISD’s standard high school capacity for up to 3,200 students, a 6A level for UIL competition standards, though the school will likely begin in 5A before moving up in classification. When it opens for the 2027-2028 school year, Davis High School will serve freshmen and sophomores and grow a grade level each year. As with schools across Northwest ISD, academic and extracurricular programs will be equitable, subject to student interest and participation.
Northwest ISD plans to communicate the proposed boundaries for the school on the evening of September 28, though the community will have opportunities to provide input on the proposal before it is finalized. A final school board decision on the boundaries will take place before Thanksgiving break.
