Northwest ISD’s curriculum team has selected the district’s elementary Writers of the Month for March 2019, honoring four students for their academic capabilities.

This month’s honorees include Hylari Gideon from Nance Elementary SchoolAubrie Whitt from Peterson Elementary SchoolEva Gosniak from Roanoke Elementary School and Reagan Bell from Thompson Elementary School. Each writer selected her favorite recent work to highlight for the award.

Hylari recently wrote a fictional story entitled “Sadie Sun vs. The Moon Twins,” and said she enjoys reading, which gives her ideas for her own imaginative stories. Aubrie recently wrote a descriptive historical essay about the Battle of Yorktown. She said having a good hook is important, as it gets readers interested in a story. Eva recently wrote a guide to her methods of writing, which include brainstorming. Reagan recently wrote a historical essay about Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius, and she said she wants to become an author when she becomes an adult.

The district’s literacy coaches work with a group of campus teachers and administrators to select students who show exemplary writing performance or tremendous growth as writers. After students are chosen, each is asked to select his or her favorite work of writing and explain why that work was chosen.

Students are recognized by district educators as well as through the Northwest ISD English Language Arts program with a certificate of achievement.
