National PSAT distinction earned by 25 Northwest ISD students

For their top scores on the PSAT, 25 Northwest ISD students have earned distinction in the National Merit Scholar and National Hispanic Recognition programs, representing each of the district’s three comprehensive high schools.

To earn National Merit distinction, students must score among the top in the state or nation on the PSAT or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test during their junior year of high school. The National Merit Scholarship Program recognizes students who are among the roughly 16,000 top scorers as Semifinalists, while students among the roughly 34,000 top scorers earn Commended status. More than 1.6 million high school students take one of the qualifying tests during their junior year.

Additionally, the NMSP collaborates with the College Board to honor roughly 5,000 students through the National Hispanic Recognition Program. These students are among the top Hispanic or Latino test-takers in the nation.

Seven Northwest ISD students earned National Merit Semifinalist status. From Byron Nelson, these students include Byron Nelson, Emma Cooley, Rebecca Croucher, Chet Graswich and Maddie Otterson. From Northwest, these students include Aiden Devlin, Kaly Phan and Oliver Ponder. These students next will be considered for National Merit Finalist distinction, which will also take into consideration their academic performances throughout the entirety of high school and SAT scores.

An additional 10 Northwest ISD students earned Commended Scholar status. From Byron Nelson, Landen Allen, Danyl Bennet, Halle Dowden-Parrot, Matthew Ji and Austin Nguyen earned Commended Scholar recognition. From Northwest, Bowen Devlin, Kyleigh Dull and Bailey Rapert earned Commended Scholar recognition. From Eaton, Ethan Biedenstein and Eli Lang earned Commended Scholar recognition.

Finally, eight district students were honored through the National Hispanic Recognition Program. Students recognized in this program include Byron Nelson’s Joshua Lass, Ethan Parks and Kelsee Villareal; Eaton’s Shay Pharr; and Northwest’s Devin Luckey, Melissa Mondragon, Michael Reyes and Ryan Torres.
