Two of Northwest Independent School District’s three high schools are set to play in the same 6A athletic district for the next two years, while its third high school will play in 5A as part of the University Interscholastic League's biennial district realignment.

The UIL announced its tentative statewide placement of schools in athletics districts by student enrollment figures on Monday, Feb. 3. As a result of the realignment process, Byron Nelson and Eaton high schools will remain in the same district. They are scheduled to compete in District 4-6A for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years, while Northwest High School is slated to compete in District 3-5A Division I in football and 6-5A in basketball and volleyball.

Northwest is the only school that changed classifications through the realignment process, though only in football. It will move up from 5A Division II to 5A Division I in that sport.

In District 4-6A, the Byron Nelson Bobcats and Eaton Eagles will be paired with Southlake Carroll and four Keller ISD schools – Central, Keller, Fossil Ridge and Timber Creek – in basketball, football and volleyball. This is the same athletic district as the previous two years with the exception of Guyer High School moving to another athletic district. The Northwest Texans will compete in District 4-5A Division I for football with Abilene Cooper, Azle, Brewer, Crowley, Fort Worth Arlington Heights, Granbury and Saginaw.

In basketball and volleyball, Northwest will compete in District 6-5A with Birdville, Denton, Denton Ryan, Grapevine, Lake Dallas, Richland and Saginaw. Basketball and volleyball districts are revised annually, though they often remain unchanged until the biennial realignment that includes football.

The cutoff point for Class 6A for 2020-21 and 2021-22 was set at a student enrollment of 2,220 or more. Class 5A’s cutoff range was set at an enrollment at or between 1,230 to 2,219 students. The UIL further segments classes 5A and below into two football classifications each based on enrollment, while 6A’s two enrollment-based classifications for football are determined after the regular season from the schools that qualify for the playoffs.

Eaton submitted Northwest ISD’s largest enrollment estimate for the 2020-21 school year at 2,593 students. Byron Nelson submitted an enrollment estimate of 2,559 students, and Northwest submitted an estimated enrollment of 1,985.

Byron Nelson and Eaton are both currently undergoing expansions as part of the district’s bond package passed by voters in 2017. These expansions will give the schools a capacity of 3,200 students, which should solidify their place in the 6A classification.
