In December, each third-year student in Northwest ISD’s Biomedical Sciences Academy housed within Byron Nelson High School receives a special right of passage — their very own laboratory coat.

However, this year’s lab coat ceremony took on a slightly different look, with seniors within the academy “accepting” coats on behalf of virtual students participating in the ceremony from home.  In-person learners presented were able to wear their lab coats for the very first time.

“We wanted to make sure that each student was celebrated this year,” said Monica Valenta, Health Sciences Coordinator for the academy.  “We have a mix of students in person and remote and we wanted to emphasize the importance of their perseverance, dedication, and passion it took to get to this point.”

A typical ceremony would traditionally be held at the school with the entire junior class of Biomedical Academy students, their parents and families present.  However this year, two smaller ceremonies were held to accommodate the school’s COVID-19 protocols while many virtual participants were able to view online.

With a live feed shared in advance with virtual learning students and parents, many extended family members were able to watch this special event.

“We’ve had so many grandparents from out of town and district teachers who are otherwise occupied login and watch,” Valenta said.  “Even though we’d love to have everything back to normal, this hybrid-style of ceremony has allowed many people the opportunity to watch that normally wouldn’t be able to.”

Lab coats are worn to school on particular assigned days over the course of the school the year.  As seniors within the academy, students will be presented with a pair of scrubs to wear to school on lab days or to their respective internships.

“This is such a tribute to their educational commitment to a future in healthcare,” said Valenta.  “They should be extremely proud of themselves.”

Students in the virtual setting that were recognized will be able to pick up their lab coats from the front office following the district’s winter break.
