Cara Carter, Northwest ISD's executive director of technology, was named the 2021 Technology Administrator of the Year for Texas during a virtual ceremony last week.

Each year, the Texas Computer Education Association honors an administrator who exhibits exemplary vision and management of technology at the district level.

Carter's leadership in the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic was highlighted in her nomination for the award. During this time, the NISD Technology Division deployed devices to all 13,000 elementary students, created a student HelpDesk website and telework site for employees, provided remote learning professional development webinars and deployed internet hotspots to families that needed them to access virtual lessons from home.

“I am so proud of Cara and her leadership of the NISD Technology Division,” said Superintendent Ryder Warren. “Cara and her team have really stepped up and adapted during the pandemic to meet the changing technology needs of our staff, students and parents. At the same time, Cara has continued to foster a culture where technology thrives in our classrooms.”

Carter accepted the role of executive director of technology just four months before the COVID-19 pandemic began. Prior to that, she led the instructional technology team as its director since 2015.

"I don't think anyone else could have worked as hard or accomplished what she did in this time," said Jason Sanders, director of instructional technology.

Carter has served Northwest ISD since 2004, beginning as a classroom teacher and working her way up as an instructional technology specialist, coordinator of instructional technology and director of instructional technology.

She received her master’s degree of education in administration from Lamar University and a bachelor of science in interdisciplinary studies from the University of North Texas. She is also a member of the Consortium of School Networking, Texas Chief Technology Officer Council, Learning Forward Academy, International Society for Technology in Education and Texas Computer Educators Association.

Sean Jones, systems engineer, was also honored by TCEA as one of three finalists in the state for their Technical Support Person of the Year award.

Carter said that one of Jones' strengths is his ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently.

"He's consistently researching proactive solutions and that keep NISD on the front edge of innovation," she said. "He keeps a general knowledge of systems that aren't in his immediate prevue, which allows him to be a collaborative problem solver and leader with his peers. To have him recognized for his unwavering dedication, makes me beyond proud."

"Sean's dedication, commitment to continual learning, and ability to share his expertise has led to great improvements that directly impact students in Northwest ISD and beyond," Sanders said.
