Second- through fifth-grade students at Haslet Elementary School are striving to run the cumulative equivalent of a marathon in the Haslet Elementary Marathon Running Club.

The Marathon Running Club takes place every Wednesday from 3-4 p.m. The club will continue through Dec. 8, culminating with students running in the NISD Reindeer Romp. At their first club on Sept. 15, over 170 students participated and worked toward their 26.2-mile goal.

Each club day, student mileages are tracked using the StrideTrack system provided by the NISD Athletic Department. Every 5 miles the students earn a “running club charm.” If they run at events outside of school, such as the Run in the Dark 5K, the mileage is added to their count, and they earn a “5K charm.” When students finish the marathon, they will be awarded a marathon medal.

Every week, students at Haslet look forward to the opportunity to get outside and exercise with their friends in running club. “It’s a great way for them to set personal goals, work hard to achieve their goals and then be rewarded for their accomplishments,” said Elizabeth Belser, P.E. teacher at Haslet.

Running clubs are also available at Berkshire Elementary, Justin Elementary, Lakeview Elementary, Nance Elementary, Peterson Elementary and Seven Hills Elementary. For more information about your school’s running club, reach out to your campus’ front office staff.

Parents of Haslet students who are interested in getting involved with the Marathon Running Club can fill out the NISD volunteer application online.
