At a special called board meeting on July 19, Dr. Ryder Warren, lone finalist for superintendent of schools in Northwest Independent School District, was appointed for his new role.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Warren to the Northwest ISD family,” said Board President Mark Schluter. His official start date will be Thursday, July 21.

The Northwest ISD Board of Trustees began the national search process in February due to the announcement of Dr. Karen Rue’s retirement. Dr. Rue has been the superintendent in Northwest ISD since 2005. More than 40 applicants from 15 states applied for the NISD superintendent position. Six were selected for initial interviews with the school board, and three were invited back for the second round of interviews.

“This is an exciting day for our family,” said Ryder Warren, Ed.D. “We are looking forward to getting settled into the community and building relationships with staff, students and community members.”

Northwest ISD encourages community involvement and participation in decisions made. In February and March, HYA Executive Search Firm conducted meetings with staff, students, administrators and community members to gather feedback to assist the Board in determining the primary qualities for the next superintendent. The community desired a student-focused leader, skilled as an effective communicator and listener with a variety of experience from the classroom to school district administration. More than 325 people participated in the meetings and more than 1,170 completed an online survey.

“I am confident we have found the right person to continue the district’s vision to graduate all students future ready,” Schluter said. “I believe Dr. Warren will guide Northwest ISD toward opportunities to advance students and staff to the next level in public education.”

Following the special board meeting, a reception for those attending the board meeting was held at the administration building.

Dr. Warren has served as superintendent of Midland ISD since July 2010. Under his leadership, Midland developed nationally recognized programs such as the Early College High School at Midland College and a gifted and talented program designed to serve gifted and talented elementary students. Prior to his career at Midland ISD, Dr. Warren was superintendent of Marble Falls ISD, Crane ISD and Thorndale ISD. He has worked as an adjunct instructor for Texas Tech University, principal of Whiteface Junior/Senior High School (Whiteface Consolidated ISD), principal of Crosbyton Middle School (Crosbyton ISD) and a teacher and athletic coach at Georgetown High School (Georgetown ISD).

Dr. Warren holds a bachelor of science degree from Angelo State University, a master’s of educational administration from Southwest Texas State University and a doctorate of education in educational leadership from Texas Tech University. He and his wife Jill have been married 26 years and have three children: Joshua, 20, Taylor Ann, 18 and Boomer, 17.

“This is a district that does not need to change its course,” Warren said. “The reputation Northwest ISD has developed and maintained speaks for itself across the state and nation. I am anxious to establish relationships with the Board of Trustees, staff, students and the NISD community.”

A meet-and-greet reception will be held on August 30 at the district’s administration building to provide parents, staff, students and community an opportunity to meet the district’s new leader.
