FFA students from Northwest High School aren’t letting COVID-19 stop their competition season. Students competed in a virtual leadership development event on Nov. 18, adapting their presentations and talents to suit a competition that’s normally hosted in person.

The Greenhand Quiz team earned fourth place at the event, completing an exam to test their knowledge of FFA history, facts, business structure and programs.  Team members included Montgomery Lankford, Jazmine Tompkins, Kaitlyn Marsh and Scarlett Wynne.

The Agriculture Advocacy team – designed to inform the general public about the importance and value of the agriculture industry – earned fifth place. The team included Tanner Treadaway, Kacie Gentry, Kaitlyn Marsh and Ryleigh Hanson.

The Public Relations team developed and presented an eight-minute program to share information about Texas FFA and what it represents to a target audience and earned eighth place. The team consisted of Re’Bekka Rebort, Torin Bennight, Kelli Schellenberg, Aubrey Brister and Rylie Capps.

Montgomery Lanford was awarded 10th place in Greenhand Creed for presenting the FFA Creed from memory, and Allie Jo Owens earned 13th place in the Senior Greenhand Creed competition.

FFA leaders

Of NISD’s three comprehensive high school FFA Chapters, Northwest High School was the only team that competed in this year’s Leadership Development Event competitions.

As part of the Texas FFA Chapter, LDE competitions encourage members to demonstrate their abilities in public speaking, decision making, communication and their knowledge of agriculture and the FFA organization. Team and individual events are used to reinforce what is taught in agricultural science classrooms.
